Patrick lives in York and works as a consultant on archaeological and heritage matters to commercial developers and public bodies. Formerly he was Assistant City Archaeologist at Winchester, and then moved to York Archaeological Trust as a Senior Field Officer responsible for directing excavations in York’s Roman fortress and town. He subsequently became Head of Fieldwork at the Trust and was responsible for a wide range of archaeological projects throughout the Yorkshire region and beyond. Patrick has an MA in economic history from Leeds University and a DPhil in archaeology from York University. He is a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London and a Member of the Institute for Archaeologists. He has been a part-time tutor in archaeology at Hull, Leeds and York Universities, and was Editor of the Archaeological Journal, 2007-12, one of Britain’s foremost peer-reviewed archaeological publications. He is chairman of the York Archaeological Forum which advises the City of York Council on archaeology and the historic environment. Patrick has published numerous books, reports and articles including Roman York (2nd edn 2004), and, in the Archaeology of York series, Excavations and Observations on the [Fortress] Defences and Adjacent Sites, 1971-90 (1996) and Archaeology in the Environs of Roman York: Excavations, 1976-2005 (2011). Most recently he was the principal author of TheRoman Cemeteries and Suburbs of Winchester: Excavations 1971-86 (2012).
